What would you miss most

I’ve had friends move away from Lincoln and there are certain things they just can’t get in their new city.  I was asked to come up with my top list of things I would miss if I moved away from Lincoln.  Let me know what you think of my list and what’s on yours…

  1. Hamburger Pizza from Memorial Stadium – Val’s is ok (and available in other cities), but there is something about that pizza made hours before and put into a cardboard box that just makes it special.
  2. Lazlo’s Fries – Probably on most people’s list, but how can they not be.
  3. Grilled Wings at Brewsky’s – They already have the best wings in town, but the grilled one’s are fantastic.  Plus I feel like they are “healthy” :-)
  4. Velvet Elvis from NuVibe – My latest vice, but if you have one, you will see why it made my list.
  5. Cola Cake from Fireworks – It’s incredibly far from my house, but there are times we eat dinner at home and then go here for this dessert to share!

Honorable Mention

  • Lazarri’s – Alfredo/Canadian Bacon Pizza
  • Fairbury Hotdog at the Stars Games
  • Lee’s Chicken – For the experience
  • Coffee House – Haitian Blue Voo Doo with lots of cream
  • Hi-Way Diner – Magic Toast

In Memory

  • Breakfast at Kuhl’s
  • Buck, Buck Burger at PO Pears

Phat Jacks BBQ

Author: Buffmeat  //  Category: BBQ

kcbs_logo_lowresI’ve been meaning to get over to Phat Jacks (4050 Cornhusker Highway) for a long time.  It’s right by my house, but I finally had the opportunity to try it last night.  To try most everything, I got the Jacks Combo and a friend ordered an appetizer. Here are my thoughts.

Burnt Ends
We got these as an appetizer and we were not disappointed.  Although they didn’t have any bark on them (giving the burnt feel) the meat was high quality and the size was generous.

Ribs
I learned from the back of the menu that the owner is also a KCBS judge.  The ribs were good, but unlike competition BBQ ribs mine were swimming in (pooled) sauce.  There is sauce on the table so I would suggest ordering them naked.  That’s what I’ll do next time.

Brisket
The brisket was my favorite part of the combo, but sliced super thin.  Again contrary to KCBS standards so I was a little lost.

Pork
The pork was good, but mine had a bit of a vinegar taste to it.  My guess was just some cross contamination on the cutting board.

Chicken
None to be found on the menu?!?!?

Overall it was a large amount of food for a good price.  I was confused on the presentation, but the ribs seemed to be cooked to perfect standards.  I’ll be back, but just make sure you ask for everything naked.

Wonderful Idea

This is a great article that talks about a Mexican food cart in LA.  Every morning he is in a different location and tells his customers where he is each morning via Twitter.  THIS is what De ‘Leon’s should have done instead of opening up 75 locations in the same month.  Think of getting a Twitter update around 12am as the bars close and there is a cheap burrito cart!!!
