Bethany Cafe – Stick with the Basics

Author: Buffmeat  //  Category: Breakfast Spot

I try to keep my criticism to something constructive.  It’s going to be tough…

Right from the start, we didn’t have a positive experience.  The interior was very institutional and drab.  I realize it must cost a fortune to open a restaurant, but go to Hobby Lobby and get some fake art for now.  This reminded me of a waiting room from the One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

No one seemed willing to help us.  We stood in the middle of the room waiting for someone to help.  I finally went to the counter and asked if we seat ourselves.  She gave me a confused, “sure”.  Rather than bother her any more, I grabbed menus on my own.

My kids shared a grilled cheese.  It was the best meal at the table, served with potato chip crumbs from the bottom of the bag.  They wanted chicken strips, but our server said they don’t have those anymore because they took too long in the toaster oven to cook.  Wow…

My wife had a bean burrito after getting a recommendation from what seemed like the owner.  It was boring and drab.  To the point it made Rosarita in the can seem more authentic.

My drive to go here was to try the breakfast burrito.  I’d read about in the Journal Star and I’m a sucker for a good one.  Unfortunately, it didn’t live up to my expectations.  Maybe it was my views of how one should be constructed, but hopefully others will like it.  The draw was the special sauce.  To me, there was nothing Mexican about it.  It reminded me of watered down Big Mac sauce actually.

If I make it back, I’ll stick to the pancakes and coffee.  Hopefully those are good.  The funny thing was, we went across the street after our meal because we were still hungry.  Watch for that ironic review next :-)

Two Twins needs another set.

Author: Beachbum  //  Category: Breakfast Spot

Visited the new Two Twins Cafe a few weekends ago and needless to say was not impressed at all.

We arrived on a Sunday to a packed house, which is usually a good sign.  After a 45 minutes wait we sat down only to hear that they were out of biscuits, hash browns and blueberry pancakes.  Not off to a good start but it happens!
My daughters ordered a drink one milk and one orange juice, when the waitress brought their drinks back they both received chocolate milk, strike 2.
Most of the breakfast items on the menu came with hash browns or breakfast rice, then your choice of bacon or sausage, so when a member of our party asked the waitress if she would be able to get double bacon since they were out of hash browns, you would think the answer would of been "of course" but…. the answer we received was "well… that will be an up charge.  We have breakfast rice on the menu, try it you will like it.  I will bring it out to you"  Strike 3
After we ordered we waited about 45 more minutes until the waitress came over to tell us that they lost our ticket.  Again… these things happen so we understood.  We asked her if she could just bring out something for our two girls who had already been there for an hour and a half and were starving.  She asked what she could bring out and we replied with a cinnamon roll for them to share.  We she came back she brought chocolate chip muffins for each of them.  Strike 4.  Trust me… this is not the end of it.
The assistant manager then came over to find out how things were, when we told her the mistakes from the waitress and how we were treated with asking for substitutions of food, we just got the attitude that it was our fault.  The owner then came over we explained things to her, she first told us that they were reviewed in the paper that weekend and so it was really busy and they didn’t expect that.  Which any restaurant owner in Lincoln knows that when that review comes out the weekend following is always busy. She then took the assistant manager outside, where she was in plain view of us, to yell at her and made her cry.  When the owner came back in, she proceeds to go around the table and ask everyone how she could make their day or if she had made their day.  She even made it a point to ask our 6 year old, which really did not know what to say.  Again we had the attitude that it was our fault for the experience and we walked out of there feeling like we were to blame.

We understand the new restaurants go through a transition period but whatever happened to the philosophy that the customer is always right.  If you are trying to build your business, make sure your customers are the number one priority.

My Take on Greenfields

Author: Buffmeat  //  Category: Breakfast Spot, Unique to Lincoln

I’ve been slammed, but I wanted to throw my comments about Greenfields (84th and Highway 2) into the ring.  We went there for a Sunday breakfast, and like many people I was really looking forward to comparing the potato casseroles to Garden Cafe.  Unlike some people, we always had a great experience at the north location.

In short, it was close, but not close enough for me to say it was the same.  I ordered the cheese and bacon casserole without onions.  They got my order right and it had just the right amount of cheese.  As fond as I am of bacon, I think I would do it again with ham instead.  A person commenting on the Lincolnite Blog hit it right on for me.  The worst part of my meal was the toast.  I love restaurant toast for some reason.  No matter how hard I try at home, it’s just one of those simple items that just seems to be better out.  Mine was like eating a cracker instead of toast.

I don’t want to get too critical because it was actually pretty good.  But I agree with the majority here in that I was hoping we had something that competed with a place like the Green Gateau or the former Garden Cafe.  Instead I think we have a local option in line with IHOP, Perkins or Village Inn.

If I’m in the neightborhood I’ll definately go back.  But considering I live on 27th and I-80, I have a lot of choices and I save the gas.
